Magnetic ionization fronts I. Parallel magnetic fields
نویسنده
چکیده
We solve the continuity equations across an ionization front. By including a plane parallel magnetic field we find significant differences in the allowed velocities of the Rand D-type solutions between the magnetized and non-magnetized cases. These results may have implications for the study of ionization bounded diffuse sources where a moderate or strong magnetic field is expected.

Magnetic ionization fronts II: Jump conditions for oblique magnetization
We present the jump conditions for ionization fronts with oblique magnetic fields. The standard nomenclature of Rand D-type fronts can still be applied, but in the case of oblique magnetization there are fronts of each type about each of the fastand slow-mode speeds. As an ionization front slows, it will drive first a fastand then a slowmode shock into the surrounding medium. Even for rather we...
متن کاملGeneration of the Primordial Magnetic Fields during Cosmological Reionization
We investigate the generation of magnetic field by the Biermann battery in cosmological ionization fronts, using new simulations of the reionization of the universe by stars in protogalaxies. Two mechanisms are primarily responsible for magnetogenesis: i) the breakout of I-fronts from protogalaxies, and ii) the propagation of I-fronts through the high density neutral filaments which are part of...
متن کاملMHD Stability of ISM Phase Transition Layers I: Magnetic Field Orthogonal to Front
We consider the scenario of a magnetic field orthogonal to a front separating two media of different temperatures and densities, such as cold and warm neutral interstellar gas, in a 2-D plane-parallel geometry. A linear stability analysis is performed to assess the behavior of both evaporation and condensation fronts when subject to incompressible, corrugational perturbations with wavelengths l...
متن کاملMagnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms
Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...
متن کاملChaotic ionization of a highly excited hydrogen atom in parallel electric and magnetic fields
We present results of our simulations of the ionization of a hydrogen atom excited to a Rydberg wave packet in the presence of external parallel electric and magnetic fields. This is an example of an open, quantum system whose classical counterpart has been shown to display chaos in the time domain. Within the framework of classical mechanics, electrons escape through chaos induced pulse trains...
